sometimes I worry

“I can’t believe that little girl said ‘we are your children’. She is not my child. None of them are Australia’s children.”
“You do know that if my silly little pipe dream one day becomes a reality and I somehow end up running for prime minister, I will be seeking to extend more rights to asylum seekers?”
“Oh, well then I won’t be voting for you.”
…Thanks.
It was a conversation that was days and days and days ago. But it’s still ringing in my head because it hurt me way more deeply than it should.
I will never have the opportunity to run for prime minister in this country, because this country is full of racists. Sometimes I wonder why I chose to pursue politics, because I’m never going to get anywhere with the way I’m thinking. The majority of this country is deaf, dumb and blind. People in other nations call Australia a racist country and most people here wear that badge with some kind of sick pride. Like it’s a good thing to be racist? Like it’s cool to acknowledge you’re an open bigot? I mean… It’s just ridiculous.
We’re one of the most multicultural societies in the world. How is it that people are still thinking this way?
People mock other ethnicities and call themselves “true Australians.” But don’t they get it? This is no such thing as an Australian. The concept of “Australia” is English; an identity enforced upon a land that had long ago developed its own series of countries. A real “Australian” is an aboriginal; someone native to this land. And yet it is the pasty white people who yell about their Australian blood the loudest. The caucasian is now the dominant race in this country; but every single pale skinned person walking on this soil originates from somewhere else. The UK, Europe, the US [Even though the US population also originates from the UK and Europe, and did the same thing as us by, you know, robbing native americans of pretty much everything..]. But hang around for a few generations and suddenly you have more rights than a race of people who has been here for thousands of years. White people came and white people stole, because they thought they could.
We are invaders. But we like to call ourselves settlers and pioneers.
And now other ethnicities that are choosing to settle in this country?
We label them as invaders.
..
I have friends that make racist comments, and when I’m offended, they laugh.
They laugh at me.
Not even the people that are supposed to support me take me seriously.
